Hello everyone 👋 I’m the Founder & CEO of Piest Systems, and I’ve spent a lot of time working around Embedded Systems, Automotive Software, testing, and technical training. I’m joining the DEV Community because I want to share practical knowledge—not just theory. The world of software is changing quickly, and one area that continues to grow is embedded software. From a small microcontroller inside an electronic device to the software controlling modern vehicles, embedded systems are everywhere. An embedded system is essentially a combination of hardware and software designed to perform a specific function. Unlike a typical desktop application, embedded software has to work closely with hardware and often has strict requirements around: Memory Processing power Timing Power consumption Reliability Communication Real-time performance This is why learning only programming languages is usually not enough for someone who wants to build a career in embedded development. You also need to understand how software communicates with hardware. Modern vehicles are becoming increasingly software-driven. A vehicle can contain multiple Electronic Control Units (ECUs) communicating with each other through different automotive communication networks. Some technologies commonly used in automotive embedded systems include: CAN, CAN-FD, CAN-XL, LIN, FlexRay, Automotive Ethernet, CAN-TP, UDS, DoCAN and DoIP. At the software level, engineers may work with: Embedded C, C++, RTOS, AUTOSAR, MCU/MPU programming, bootloader development, diagnostics, device drivers and communication stacks. And that's only part of the ecosystem. If you are interested in automotive software development, you have probably heard about AUTOSAR. AUTOSAR provides a standardized software architecture for automotive ECUs. Understanding concepts such as: Application Software Components RTE BSW MCAL ECU Abstraction Communication Stack OS Diagnostics Network Management can give engineers a much better understanding of how modern automotive software is structured. AUTOSAR is also closely connected with automotive software development, configuration, integration and testing. One thing I have noticed is that many people focus heavily on software development but don't spend enough time understanding software testing and validation. In automotive systems, testing is extremely important. This is where technologies such as SIL, HIL, ECU testing, test automation, CAN testing, diagnostics testing and system validation become important. For example, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing allows an ECU to be tested against simulated real-world conditions before the complete vehicle environment is available. That makes HIL an important part of automotive ECU validation and verification. If you are starting in embedded or automotive software, I strongly recommend understanding communication protocols rather than simply memorizing their names. Start with the fundamentals: I2C → SPI → UART → CAN → CAN-FD → LIN → Ethernet → TCP/IP → UDP Then move toward automotive-specific technologies such as: UDS → CAN-TP → DoCAN → DoIP Once you understand how data actually moves between a microcontroller, ECU, sensor, actuator and other systems, many advanced automotive concepts become easier to understand. Automotive is just one part of the embedded world. Embedded engineers can also work in: IoT Consumer electronics Industrial automation Medical devices Robotics Telecommunications Aerospace Semiconductor products Technologies such as Embedded Linux, RTOS, ARM processors, MCU, MPU, CPU, GPU, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and IoT are relevant across many of these industries. At Piest Systems, our focus is on helping learners and working professionals understand these technologies from a practical and industry-oriented perspective. We work around areas such as: Advanced Embedded Systems My goal with this DEV profile is not simply to promote courses. I want to share what I have learned, discuss real engineering concepts, and hopefully help someone who is trying to enter or grow in the Embedded Systems and Automotive Software industry. In future posts, I plan to write about topics such as: How an automotive ECU actually works CAN vs CAN-FD vs CAN-XL Understanding UDS diagnostics AUTOSAR architecture explained simply RTE, BSW and MCAL Automotive HIL testing Bootloader development Embedded C concepts RTOS fundamentals Automotive Ethernet and DoIP ECU testing and validation Embedded Linux Real-world embedded projects If you are working or learning in Embedded Systems, Automotive Software, AUTOSAR, HIL Testing, IoT, VLSI or related technologies, I'd be happy to connect and learn from each other. What embedded technology are you currently learning or working with? Let's start a conversation. 🚀 Piest Systems 🌐 https://piestsystems.com
