Every browser maker reached the same conclusion over the past year: the browser is where AI should live. Then they split into two camps that disagree about almost everything else. Camp one builds agents. ChatGPT Atlas reads your pages, remembers context across sessions, and drives the browser for you through Agent Mode. Perplexity's Comet does similar work. Dia, from The Browser Company, chats with your tabs and automates the least of the three, but still leans toward doing things on your behalf. Camp two builds a research assistant. On September 16, 2026, Mozilla and Mistral announced that Firefox Smart Window, Mozilla's AI browsing assistant, is now powered by Mistral models. No agent mode. No form filling. No clicking on your behalf. The pitch is narrower and, depending on your view, either boring or the most important promise in the category: the AI helps you think, and your data stays yours. I have not used Smart Window myself. It is in beta, currently limited to the U.S., Canada, and as of this week France, so this is a researched comparison rather than a hands-on review. Everything below comes from Mozilla's own blog posts, the Mistral announcement, and security writing on the agentic browser category, all linked inline. What I can do is lay out exactly what each side has committed to, what the trade-offs are, and how I would choose. Strip away the press language and Smart Window is three concrete features sitting in Firefox: Answer questions with sources, in place. Through a partnership with Exa, Smart Window retrieves current web information and shows the sources behind its response without pushing you to a separate search results page. Group your tabs. It suggests groups for related tabs, spots duplicates, and closes them with a click. Find pages you half-remember. It shows visual previews of pages from your browsing history, so you can spot the one you meant without opening five candidates. Mozilla started this project in November 2025 under the name "AI Window," then renamed it after beta feedback showed people using it for everyday browsing rather than as a chat toy. One beta user described it as a way to keep track of their train of thought. That is the honest scope: it helps you finish what you started online. It does not pretend to be an employee. The September 16 announcement is mostly a partnership press release, but it contains commitments precise enough to hold Mozilla and Mistral to later: Mistral models power Smart Window for users in France and North America, with the United Kingdom and Germany expected to follow later this year. France went live first, in French, marking the first expansion beyond North America. Conversations are not saved on Mozilla's servers by default. Mistral operates under zero data retention for this integration. Prompts and responses are not kept, and Mozilla states plainly that it will not sell personal data or use your conversations to train models. It is optional and switchable. Smart Window is opt-in, you choose which tabs and how much history it can see per task, and Firefox's AI Controls let you turn it off entirely. For context on why Mistral matters here: the company raised 3 billion euros in September 2026, the largest European tech fundraising on record, at a valuation of 21 billion euros. It remains far smaller than OpenAI or Anthropic, but its models are open-weight, meaning clients can inspect and run them on their own infrastructure. Mozilla, a nonprofit that has spent two decades arguing that one company should not control the web, picked the one major lab whose technology it could theoretically audit. That pairing is not accidental. Atlas, Comet, and Dia share one architecture decision that changes everything: the agent acts with your authority. It reads open pages, navigates, clicks, scrolls, and fills forms using your sessions, cookies, and logged-in accounts. The browser stops being a window you drive and becomes a colleague that drives it with you. The capability is genuinely useful. Cross-tab synthesis, asking an agent to read five open pages and build a comparison table, works well today and beats copy-pasting into a chat window. Booking, form-heavy workflows, and multi-step research all benefit. The problem comes from the same architecture. A language model in a browser has a single input channel, and everything on the open web flows into it: page text, hidden instructions, comments, PDF content. Researchers call the attack class prompt injection, and it maps directly onto the most hostile content source there is. An agent holding your logged-in sessions is simultaneously the thing being attacked and the thing holding your credentials. The uncomfortable part is who said the quiet part. As the security analysis from Automater's agentic browser review documents, OpenAI itself has acknowledged that the injection problem in agentic browsers may never be fully solved. When the vendor with the largest security budget in the category says that, the honest reading is that current defenses are brakes, not guarantees. To be fair to both sides: Smart Window avoids this entire class by refusing to act, but it also cannot deliver the payoff. An assistant that never clicks cannot book your flight, and prompt injection matters less when the worst case is a bad summary rather than a purchase made with your cookies. These products are usually reviewed on features. That is the wrong frame. They differ on three structural axes: Autonomy. Atlas Agent Mode operates pages directly and can execute multi-step tasks. Comet automates research and task flows. Dia deliberately automates the least. Smart Window automates nothing. On this axis, more autonomy is more power and more risk, in one straight line. Data posture. Smart Window defaults to no server-side conversation storage, zero retention at Mistral, and a visible off switch. Atlas offers opt-in browser memories that persist across sessions, which is the opposite default. Comet and Dia sit somewhere between, and the details live in privacy policies most people never read. Who holds the model. Firefox runs Mistral open-weight models under a nonprofit's governance. Atlas runs OpenAI's closed frontier models. Comet runs Perplexity's stack. If you believe model providers should be auditable, only one of these gives you even a theoretical path to that. One more practical difference: availability. Smart Window is beta-only in three countries. Atlas shipped on macOS first and has been widening its rollout since October 2025. If you are outside North America or France, the comparison is partly academic for now. Here is the decision matrix I would actually use: You handle sensitive client data, medical or legal material, or corporate logins in your browser. Smart Window's philosophy fits. Even then, treat the zero-retention promise as a policy to verify, not a law of nature. Your work is high-volume form filling, booking, or repetitive research across many sites. The agentic browsers win, because Smart Window simply cannot do the job. Pair that choice with a separate, non-privileged browser profile so the agent never holds your important sessions. You want tab triage and sourced answers without a new workflow. Honestly, Smart Window's tab grouping and history previews cover what most people ask an AI browser for. Most of us do not need an agent. We need to find the tab we lost. You are in Bangladesh, Europe outside the UK and Germany, or anywhere Smart Window is not available. The choice is theoretical today. But the privacy commitments are worth knowing about, because they set a benchmark you can demand from whoever ships in your region. The pattern I would bet on: the two camps converge from opposite ends. Agentic browsers will add the guardrails and local processing that Smart Window treats as foundational, and Smart Window will slowly grow controlled, sandboxed forms of action. The question of which one you trust with your cookies will matter for about two years. Then it will be table stakes. If you use any AI browser feature, including Firefox's, these five settings take about ten minutes to review: Check what the AI can see. In Firefox, AI Controls is one place to manage Smart Window, including which tabs are shareable per task. In Atlas, review browser memories and turn them off if you did not consciously enable them. Separate identities. Keep banking, work admin, and email logins out of any browser profile that runs an agent. Cookies are authority. Do not hand authority to a text-completion engine. Assume page content can instruct the model. Anything you did not type, a page, a PDF, a comment thread, is potential input to the AI. Be more suspicious of a page that asks the agent to "ignore previous instructions" in any phrasing. Read the retention line, not the marketing. "Private" means nothing. "Zero data retention" with a named vendor, as in the Mistral commitment, means something checkable. Turn everything off once, on purpose. Every one of these features is reversible. Trying a week with AI browsing fully disabled tells you which features you actually missed. In my prediction, it is tab search and history, not the agent. Mozilla and Mistral did not ship the most exciting AI browsing feature this month. They shipped the most falsifiable one. Zero retention, no training on your conversations, an off switch, and open-weight models are specific claims that can be tested and broken publicly. That is what accountability looks like in a category currently running on vibes. The agentic browsers are not wrong. Autonomy is where the value is, and the injection problem is hard precisely because the payoff is real. But right now, if you asked me which approach I would point a non-technical family member toward, it is the one that never touches their credentials.
